Social memoir comics

I’m not sure there’s a name for this – documentary comics? Graphic memoir? – but I’m certainly not the only one doing it.

In a nutshell, these comics take true stories, gathered via research or interviews (and in one case, my own life history), and bring them to life via the comics format. I absolutely love working this way.

Examples

The Noisy Valley

Drawing of the view at the top of Maerdy mountain by Myfanwy Tristram

Three years in the making, The Noisy Valley is based on interviews with residents of the Rhondda Valley, South Wales, telling their memories of protest.

Satin & Tat

A work in progress, Satin and Tat is a semi-fictionalised memoir diving deep into my own memories of teen years as one of the few goths in rural Devon.

Sorry for the Inconvenience

Excerpt from a double spread of Myfanwy Trsitram's book 'Sorry for the Inconvenience We Are Trying to Save the World' showing the toppling of the Colston statue

Sorry For The Inconvenience, We Are Trying To Save The World began as a collection of drawings of people protesting, and grew into a longer work examining significant protests of our time, why we protest, and how to stay safe when you do.
